Located in Charleston, South Carolina, the Center for Human Health Risk (CHHR) conducts
research to understand and forecast relationships between coastal ocean ecosystems
and human health and well-being and to make the information and tools available
to managers and public health officials. Research is conducted through the Oceans
and Human Health Branch of the Center. To further the CHHR mission the Research
Coordination and Administrative Support Branch provides and supports the Hollings
Marine Laboratory, a safe and secure state-of-science environment to facilitate
collaboration among five partners; NOS, the Medical University of South Carolina,
National Institute of Science and Technology, University of Charleston, and South
Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Operating through a joint project agreement
which focuses on the relationship between the coastal ocean ecosystem and human
health, HML, one of NOAA’s Centers of Excellence in Oceans and Human Health, represents
an innovative way of developing scientific advancements by integrating medical and
marine expertise through a diverse partnership among Federal, state, and academic
organizations.
