Toxic Contaminants Research at Hollings Marine Laboratory

Overview

chemical extraction

HML research focuses on both historic and emerging contaminant issues related to the health of estuarine habitats, marine animals, coral reefs and other marine ecosystems. Knowledge gained from this collective research can be used for coastal zone management, including management issues that directly influence human health. HML investigators focus their research on nutritive and toxic trace metals, organometallic contaminants, and classic and emerging organic pollutants. Studies are also being done on pharmaceutical and personal care products, in which traces of can be found in our environment. Research also aims at identification, purification and structural characterization on naturally occurring toxins, as well as metabolomic studies using NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) techniques. All of this research can help determine biological markers of marine stress and health, and many other marine related issues.
